Dozens of Fort McCoy members participated in the Memorial Day Run/Walk on May 24 at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Tomah, Wis.
Leading the way for the Fort McCoy delegation was Col. Brooks Shultze, commander of the 181st Multi-Functional Training Brigade, and Command Sgt. Maj. Martin Conroy, 181st command sergeant major.
Also participating as guests of honor were 85th Support Command Commanding General Brig. Gen. Kris Belanger and Command Sgt. Maj. Vernon I. Perry III, the 85th’s command sergeant major.
“Participants from the VA medical center also attended in their wheelchairs with support from the VA staff,” said Lt. Col. Mark Woommavovah, deputy commanding officer of the 181st. “Also attending were Fort McCoy civilian employees, Soldiers, family members, K9 teams, and Tomah High School students.”
The event is held to commemorate Memorial Day and what it means, Woommavovah said.
According to history, Memorial Day is a holiday observed on the last Monday of May to honor men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.
The 2018 Memorial Day Run/Walk at the Tomah VA Medical Center was organized and planned by the medical center staff and the 1st Battalion, 310th Brigade Engineer Battalion — a unit associated with the 181st at Fort McCoy.
