Shipwrecked is a week-long event held on the week of June 4-June 8, 2018 at Central Chapel, Fort Irwin, Calif. It is being held with the assistance of members of the Blackhorse Chapel and the Central Chapel. This event is aimed to give the youth of Fort Irwin a constructive and learning environment to have fun during their summer vacation.
According to Mary Ann Snyder, VBS director, more than 90 volunteers from the Fort Irwin area took part in the two month planning, setup, and implementation of Shipwrecked. The volunteers for this event included chaplain’s assistants from various units and Fort Irwin military police.
This is an annual event, primarily held two weeks after the release of school due to the in and out schedule of the post. Shipwrecked is one of many, to include Post Women of the Chapel and the AWANA Club, held throughout the year by the chapels on Fort Irwin.
“These events are about reaching out to the community and its children,” said Brooke Taylor, event assistant leader and teen volunteer of the year. “It teaches them the gospel and that Jesus and God are with them at all times.”
Soldiers, spouses, and teens all volunteer their free time to assist in Shipwrecked in the hopes of helping children and their families not only with learning about the gospel but also in working through challenging times with the help of God.
This event reminds children, whether they are moving to another post, struggling at school, or any other stress in their lives they always have a friend in Jesus, said Jodi Rodriquez, VBS register.
Events like Shipwrecked are important to the readiness of Soldiers and their families. Chaplain services is one of many organizations that plan events to assist not only Fort Irwin as a military post, but as a community.(U.S. Army photo and story by Sgt. Justin May)
