Naval Air Test and Evaluation Squadron One

NAVAL AIR STATION PATUXENT RIVER, Md.- Aviation Maintenance Administrationman 2nd Class Marquise Sargent, assigned to Naval Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 1, immediately assisted victims in a motor vehicle accident involving three vehicles, one being his own, during morning rush hour traffic in Lexington Park, Md., June 6.

The accident resulted in a head-on collision which turned one vehicle on its side and totaled two vehicles;however, there were no reported injuries.

"I saw the first car coming from the wrong way and watched as it flipped and hit the second car," said Sargent. "When my car was hit, my first thought was if she [the driver] was ok, and then I saw a car seat in the back. I got out of my car and checked on her. Luckily, her baby wasn't with her that morning. After I made sure she was ok, I helped the first car's driver, who was hanging in their straps, out of their sun roof as safely as possible."

After ensuring the safety of the drivers involved and turning over pertinent information to rescue personnel, and to insurance companies, Sargent reported to his division at VX-1 like any other day. At the end of his shift, he was surprised to be recognized by his commanding officer, Capt. Gregory Sleppy, who presented him a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal in front of his division.

"I was shocked to get the award, but it's nice to be recognized," said Sargent. "Now it seems like just another day doing what needed to be done. I'm just glad that no one got hurt.

The principal mission of VX-1 is to test and evaluate airborne anti-submarine warfare, maritime anti-surface weapon systems and airborne strategic weapon systems, as well as support systems, equipment and materials in an operational environment. The squadron also develops, reviews and disseminates new Operational Tactics Guides to provide guidance to fleet units on initial operating capabilities before fleet tactical publications are ready.
