FORT LEWIS - Brig. Gen. Heidi V. Brown became the first female general officer to be promoted in the air defense artillery branch. Brown's promotion took place during a ceremony, Dec. 12, at Fort Lewis, Wash. Before her current position as deputy commander for sustainment for I Corps, she served as deputy commander of Fort Bliss and assistant commandant for the U.S Army Air Defense Artillery School.
"I think female Soldiers in air defense will see this as yet another tangible example of the fact that they too can attain this rank – that there is a possibility out there," said Brown. "Within the last month we had general Ann Dunwoody promoted – the first woman four-star. I think it is very positive because it's not just talk anymore."
A week after the ceremony, Brown returned to El Paso – the place she calls home – to visit family and attend a reception at the Fort Bliss Officers' Club, where she received a warm welcome from a group of guests that included the post's commanding general, Maj. Gen. Howard B. Bromberg, and some of Brown's school teachers.
"This is my home," said Brown. "I was born and raised here. I wanted an opportunity to thank the El Paso community and to thank Fort Bliss and the air and missile defense community for all their support."
Brown's current position has been preparing her for her upcoming deployment to Iraq this spring. I Corps will replace 18th Airborne Corps as the multinational corps in Iraq, and Brown will serve as the deputy commanding general for sustainment in MNCI; again, breaking ground by becoming the first female to serve in that position. Brown will be responsible for all logistic and sustainment for coalition and Iraqi forces, and will also be involved with detainee operations.
During the last 27 years, Brown has served in combat arms units and led Soldiers in the theater of operations. She was the first female to command both an ADA battalion and brigade. She recently traveled to Iraq in preparation for her upcoming deployment.
"I feel very confident going in and being the point person for the corps when we replace the 18th Airborne Corps," she said.
