FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. – The 111th Military Intelligence Brigade hosted a simultaneous Change of Command and Change of Responsibility Ceremony for the 309th Military Intelligence Battalion at Chaffee Parade Field on June 8.

The command team of the 309th Military Intelligence Battalion, Lt. Col. Mark Denton, the outgoing Commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Louis Brown III, the outgoing Command Sergeant Major, transferred their authorities to Lt. Col. David Black and Command Sgt. Maj. Bryan Haggerty. Col. Brian Lieb, Commander of the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade, hosted the ceremony.

Lieb congratulated the outgoing command team for their tremendous accomplishments the last 2-years which included executing the training mission for the Army’s Human-Intelligence and Counter-Intelligence courses and taking on the training of the Advanced Individual Training for the Army’s Military Intelligence Systems Maintainer/Integrators.

Denton hails from Montego Bay, Jamaica. He graduated from Norwich University and was commissioned as a Military Intelligence Officer in 1997. His next position will be as a staff officer for NATO Special Operations Component Command Afghanistan.

“Now that I have fought the good fight and have done my best, I just hope it was good enough. Now it is time for me to depart,” said Denton. “Team 309, you are getting two fantastic leaders in Lt. Col. Black and Command Sgt. Maj. Haggerty. I know they will take this team to new heights.”

Brown hails from Washington DC. He began his career in the United States Army in February of 1996. His next position is at Fort Sam Houston as the G2 Sergeant Major for U.S. Army South.

“These Soldiers standing before you are some of the smartest I have seen. Somewhere in this formation is a Command Sgt. Maj., Brigade Commander, or a Chief Warrant Officer 5,” said Brown. “The sky is the limit”.

“I am excited to begin the next chapter of the 309th Military Intelligence Battalion,” said Black. “Your legacy has preceded you. If we are able to move the battalion forward, it will only be because we are building on the efforts of Lt. Col. Denton, Command Sgt. Maj. Brown, and your hard work and dedication.”

Black enlisted in the Army in 1996 as a Fire Support Specialist and was commissioned a Military Intelligence Officer in 1999 after graduating from the US Army Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning, GA. He most recently served in Yongsan, Republic of Korea where he served as the Future Operations Intelligence Planner and the J26 Assessment, Strategy, and Plans Branch Chief at U.S. Forces Korea J2.

“Being selected to serve as the Command Sergeant Major for this battalion it truly an honor and privilege,” said Haggerty.

Haggerty began his career in the United States Army in November of 1995 as an Infantryman (13B) at Fort Campbell. He most recently served as the Brigade Operations Sergeant Major for the 111th Military Intelligence Brigade.
