OAK HARBOR, Wash. (NNS) – Capt. Kevin D. Long relieved Capt. Robert W. Patrick as commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Ten (CPRW-10) during a change of command ceremony Jun. 8 in CPRW-10 Hangar 6 at Naval Air Station (NAS) Whidbey Island.

Patrick served as commander since Nov. 2016, providing exemplary leadership for CPRW-10 during Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom, earning the Navy Marine Corps Peer Leadership Award and managing more than 3,000 military personnel, nine aircraft squadrons and 73 aircraft.

As commander of CPRW-10, Patrick ensured the wing supported three carrier strike groups, two amphibious ready groups, four carrier air wings and 10 flag level exercises in a Pacific Command Third Fleet forward initiative.

“One of the main tenants of a leader is leading by example and Capt. Patrick has demonstrated his superior leadership qualities time and time again,” said Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic, Rear Adm. Roy J. Kelley, the guest speaker during the ceremony. “Specifically, he guided the wing through all facets of the maritime patrol and reconnaissance training and readiness lifecycle. His efforts directly resulted in more than 41,000 mishap free flight hours in all three: the P-8, the P-3 and the EP-3 missions sets.”

After Kelley’s speech, Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group, Rear Adm. William W. Wheeler presented Patrick with an end of tour award, the Legion of Merit, recognizing Patrick’s exemplary leadership and professional conduct since the beginning of his leadership for CPRW-10.

Patrick then stood up and gave his final remarks as commander of CPRW-10, thanking family members and all those in attendance for the ceremony before specifically reminding CPRW-10 of their important mission.

“We must always be ready because failure is not an option," said Patrick. "With the team we have assembled, anything is possible.”

Patrick saved his last thanks for the Sailors under his command.

“I could not ask for a better team of warfighters. Thank you for everything you’ve done over the past few years. It’s been my humble honor to work with you.”

Reading of orders then commenced, and Capt. Long took command of CPRW-10 issuing his first order that all current instructions and notices continue as they stand, and celebrating the ceremony with a long weekend.

“Take Monday off and I will see you bright and early Tuesday morning to get back at it.”
