WASHINGTON (June 9, 2018) –The District of Columbia National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters-Air honored Tech. Sgt. Vanessa M. Hinnant at a retirement ceremony at the D.C. National Guard Armory today.
Hinnant decided that, after 31 years of honorable service to the United States and the D.C. Air National Guard, it was time to retire.
Hinnant began her career with the Air Force Reserve in New Jersey as a C-40 engine mechanic. After serving there for almost 10 years, she relocated to Washington, D.C., and transferred to the D.C. Air National Guard as an aircraft avionics specialist with the 113th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.
A need in Recruiting and Retention created an opportunity for Hinnant to cross train into the personnel career field. She became the D.C. Air National Guard’s personnel retention subject matter expert and designed a plan for 113th Wing Airmen to continue their military careers and extend their service commitments with the unit. As a retention specialist, Hinnant was able to assist many organizations such as the 113th Forces Support Squadron, Logistics Readiness Squadron and Civil Engineer Squadron. Due to her dedication and willingness to always go the extra mile, retention of Airman began to increase.
The expertise obtained by Hinnant, and the rise in personnel retention at the Wing, caught the eye of National Guard Bureau personnel who offered her the opportunity to join their staff. There she assisted the human resources office, managed the orderly room and worked with the logistics office. After 10 years at NGB, Hinnant joined the Commander’s Support Staff at Joint Force Headquarters, D.C. National Guard. There she became be a key advisor to commanders and leaders regarding personnel and retention matters.
“Tech. Sgt. Hinnant was somewhat quiet and seemed shy, but always willing and able to help you out,” said Col. Mark Maldonado, deputy commanding general-air, DCNG. “She’d always say ‘Yes’ and never asked for anything in return.”
Maldonado continued, saying that everyone looked to Hinnant for assistance and guidance and that she was always there to provide assistance and customer service. He also commented that her 30 years of service to the country and Air National Guard is a testament to how honorable and effective her dedication to duty and self-sacrifice was.
“She will be missed but will always be family to all of us here,” Maldonado said.
