    FORT BUCHANAN, Puerto Rico – The Puerto Rico National Guard Military and Life Counseling Program is presenting members of the 156th Airlift Wing tools to cope with loss and the grieving process at Fort Buchanan, June 8. Recently members of the wing suffered the loss of nine fellow Airmen. This presentation allows the Airmen to share their feelings, emotions and grief associated with the tragedy.

    The MLCP is provided on most military installations at no cost to the individual member, couples, families and groups.

    “Resiliency is an element that we need present during lifetime events that challenge our confidence, strength, optimism and mental agility,” said Staff Sgt. Richard Mercedes, State Resiliency Coordinator.

    The MLCP provides short term non-medical counseling services such as psycho-education to assist family members understand the impacts of military life and the stresses related to unique difficulties before, during and after deployments.

    These coping mechanism can benefit military families struggling with issues related to deployment, stress while a spouse or loved one is not present, pressures of parenting, managing finances, reintegration, grief and loss.

    “When family, friends and coworkers listen to our military members and their families during the grief process it helps the recovery process,” said Nina Martinez, Mental Health Network Government Services Psychologist.

    This program has available Masters or Doctorate licensed counselors who assist in complementing services such as anger management, deployment stress, separation, sadness, coping skills for grief and loss, and parenting.

    The 156th AW members were divided into two separate classrooms and each group was directed by a licensed Psychologist from MHN Government Services.

    They began by defining grief as a natural emotional response a person can feel when someone they love or know is taken away.

    During the presentation several Airmen shared their feelings, emotions and grief associated with the recent loss of their fellow Airmen.

    The psychologist mentioned several tips to cope with the grieving process such as spending time with friends, exercising, eating well, getting plenty of rest. They also advise to seek help if coping methods don’t work and the stress continues to interfere with your ability to function and work.
