MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – For the second consecutive year, Mess Hall 227 on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune won the Major General W.P.T. Hill Memorial Award for best full food service mess hall, June 7.
Col. Scott Baldwin, assistant chief of staff, G-4 for MCB Camp Lejeune presented the award to the staff of MH-227 and offered praise for their hard work.
“You are not just feeding Marines,” said Baldwin. “You are helping them accomplish whatever the nation is calling on them to do.”
Baldwin explained his appreciation of the mess hall staff for all of their dedication towards their work the past two years.
“Not many things go in front of chow for a Marine,” said Baldwin. “When I ask around nine times out of ten Marines say that this is the best chow hall on base, so you can imagine that is saying something.”
The Major General W.P.T. Hill Memorial Award is earned through inspections of mess hall facilities Marine Corps wide. There are multiple categories in which a mess hall can win an award in the competition, ranging from traditional mess halls to field mess set ups for training exercises.
“This award signifies that you are the best of the best in the Marine Corps,” said John Ward, production manager three of MH-227. “A lot of man hours and a lot of attention to detail by our staff went into winning this award and I cannot thank my staff enough.”
The majority of the mess hall staff was in attendance at MH-227 for the award presentation.
“It is an honor to win this award,” said Shellie Duff, Marine Corps food management information operator clerk. “There is a lot of prestige that goes along with winning this award and we have won it twice now.”
