Story by Airman 1st Class Anne Ortiz

    47th Flying Training Wing

Security forces plays many roles in the U.S. Air Force, and one role people see on a daily basis are the Airmen guarding the gate.
As the very first line of base defense, Airman 1st Class Nancy Veloz, 47th Security Forces Squadron installation patrolman, enjoys many things about her job. A few of the aspects of her job she enjoys are seeing how the military working dogs are handled, staying prepared for deployment, patrolling the base and especially getting to know many people.
For Veloz, every shift begins with a review of safety regulations and an update from the previous shift. Then she either patrols the base or goes to the gate to check ID cards along with greeting the commuters.
At the gate, as the first face people see when they are driving onto base, it is up to Veloz and the other security forces Airmen manning the gate to make a positive first impression of the base and the Air Force.
“We check a lot of ID [cards] so we get to know a lot of people,” Veloz said.
One of the things Veloz enjoys about being stationed at the gate are when people make an attempt to get to know her, or when they bring pets through.
“It’s fun when kids come through and try to tell me knock-knock jokes,” said Veloz.
    “Knock, knock.”
    “Who’s there?”
    “Interrupting cow.”
    “Interrupting cow wh—“
    “Moooooooo moooo mooooo!”
Overall, Veloz’s job involves many tasks whether it be scanning ID cards or monitoring the perimeter of the base. All of these tasks are to keep people and resources on base safe and secure.
“I like that people can say they feel safe here,” Veloz said. “Especially for Halloween when we did the ‘pumpkin patrol,’ and people felt safe trick-or-treating here.”
Veloz, along with her wingmen, work day in and day out, not only to protect Laughlin, but also to present a positive image of the U.S. Air Force.
