U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Michael X. Garrett, the U.S. Army Central commanding general, conducted a town hall meeting at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, June 14, 2018. Garrett’s intent was to inform USARCENT and other subordinate units’ Soldiers on his vision and enduring priorities.
His four main topics of discussion included readiness, protecting the force, communication, and transitions.
“Readiness is our number one priority, and professional development is also part of readiness, and you should be taking advantage of the development opportunities here in Kuwait,” Garrett said.
Protecting the force is a subject that Garrett pays very close attention to.
“Without a capable force, the U.S. Army would not be what it is today, but this also includes our efforts to secure our networks and classified information,” said Garrett. “I need your attention to detail to be secure while we communicate.”
After commanding USARCENT for over two and a half years, which includes 20 countries, Garrett said, communication is an enduring priority that he takes very seriously.
Units and Soldiers at Camp Arifjan are continuously transitioning; whether it is in-processing or leaving theater, transitions are a part of daily life here. Garrett wants constant communication between units that will be replacing each other, so the changeover happens smoothly.
Garrett also encouraged Soldiers to express any questions or concerns they had in an open discussion forum with other Camp Arifjan senior leaders.
U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Joseph C. Cornelison, the U.S. Army Central command sergeant major, was also in attendance for the general’s town hall and briefly commented on Garrett’s importance of communication.
“His [Garrett] third enduring priority is communication, and that is what this forum allowed him to do, communicate directly to our Soldiers, Non-Commissioned Officers, Officers that makeup ARCENT,” said Cornelison.
Town halls allow Soldiers and their chain of command to feel comfortable around senior ranking officials and openly discuss matters that directly and indirectly affect them while in theater.
“I do my best to listen to the needs of your commanders and put those needs at the top of my to-do list,” Garrett said.
