An effective Army is an Army that wins. In today's modern times a large, multi-spectral battlefield exists and it requires an impressive amount of coordination from various war-fighting functions to achieve success. In order to win any complex scenario, the U.S. Army exercises a strategy known as "mission command" to allow for quick coordination between the war fighting functions - movement and maneuver, intelligence, artillery fires, sustainment and protection.
Mission command as defined by the U.S. Army is, "…the exercise of authority and direction by the command using mission orders to enable disciplined initiative within the commander's intent to empower agile and adaptive leaders in the conduct of unified land operations." In summary, commanders at the tactical level must be able to collect and act on information in a de-centralized manner.
Introduce Nett Warrior.
Nett Warrior is a system that brings unparalleled situational awareness to the U.S. Army through navigation and information sharing capabilities used by mobile devices. The end user device has a multitude of features and programs that connect leadership teams in real-time and allows for mission command to succeed.
"With Nett Warrior, the ability to plan and rehearse an entire operation in a decentralized environment is unmatched,” said Maj. Matthew Bailey, executive officer, 3rd Squadron, 2d Cavalry Regiment. “We can have five troops spread across multiple [areas of operation] and never need to bring people together for a face to face meeting.”
For the 2d Cavalry Regiment, Nett Warrior played a major role during Saber Strike 18, a multi-national exercise, located across four countries, encompassing 19 allied and partner nations. Through map graphics, orders and pinpoint location sharing, the system allows for quick, efficient communication from regiment to squadron command and staff teams all the way down to the platoon level.
All 2CR tactical operations centers had the opportunity for quick situational awareness of every sister unit operation between Germany, Czech, Poland and Lithuania. This situational awareness is a rare feat to accomplish and it adds accurate planning considerations for squadrons to include in their orders.
“You can share, collaborate and disseminate in real time,” continued Bailey. “It allows for [a] shared understanding of the operation and allows for subordinate initiative all while informing higher command [in] real time for [situational awareness] on the battlefield. It truly makes it feasible to execute decentralized and at a pace that is unmatched."
Troop command teams saw a large increase in the ability to conduct mission command and make acute, tactical recommendations to squadron plans through bottom-up refinement by utilizing Nett Warrior.
"Planning is immediate as opposed to waiting for briefs, so parallel planning with accurate, bottom-up refinement is possible, and it is effective,” explained Capt. Sean Keeler, commander, Lightning Troop, 3/2CR.
Platoon level operations saw an increase in efficiency. While operating a casualty collection point away from the front lines, Sgt. 1st Class Oscar Laos, platoon sergeant, Iron Troop, 3/2CR, was confident he had a good picture of his platoon’s operations without needing to ping for information.
“Through wideband radios in Nett Warrior, the communication at the lowest levels [has] a huge impact on operations,” said Laos. “Clear [situation reports] were sent through instant messaging that left no room for translation error by radio operators.”
Saber Strike 18 created an opportunity to implement the new system into a real time training scenario, increasing operator confidence and a chance to recognize refinement recommendations to the platform. At the end of the day, the implementation of Nett Warrior allowed the Regiment to effectively exercise its greatest strategy – mission command.
