Maj. Gen. Troy D. Kok, commanding general of the U.S. Army Reserve’s 99th Readiness Division, delivered the Oath of Office to the graduating midshipmen.
Graduates of the USMMA must serve for five years in the military’s active-component or eight years in the reserve-component as part of their service obligation. This service can be in any military branch.
“It takes all components to make our Army the greatest army on the face of this Earth,” Kok said. “It takes all components to come together as we all have different equities that we bring to the battle to make us that lethal force.”
Serving in the Army Reserve gives graduates the unique opportunity to fulfill their service obligation while still being able to hold full-time civilian jobs using the skills and knowledge gained at the academy.
These highly-trained men and women also help make the Army Reserve the most capable, combat-ready and lethal federal reserve force in the nation’s history.
“When you put that uniform on, you represent the United States of America, you represent your service, and you represent your branch,” Kok said to the midshipmen. “In your Army careers, put your best foot forward and always live the Army Values.”
The USMMA’s story began in 1936 when Congress passed the Merchant Marine Act. The U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps was established two years later, and construction was begun on the academy at its current location in Kings Point in 1942. Fifteen months later, the USMMA was officially dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
The academy and its graduates have also played a role in the nation’s armed conflicts from World War II to the present, ranging from convoy escorting to sealifting military and humanitarian supplies to countries in need.
