Approximately 100 Georgia Guardsmen with the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 201st Regional Support Group, will deploy this summer to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

The group, comprised of diverse Military Occupational Specialties, will be serving as the Base Operating Support Integrator, or the “mayor’s cell.” According to Col. Michael Maddox, commander, 201st Regional Support Group, the role of mayor’s cell is essentially responsible for running base camps.

“Many of the bases that were built up had been either vacant or run down,” said Maddox. “A lot is being put into making the bases efficient again.”

A majority of the Soldiers received new training on how to manage service contracts as well as base construction management and planning, security management, and management of housing and vehicle distribution. Soldiers had to learn all of these new capabilities parallel to their basic soldier skills.

These management tasks mean many of the 201st junior noncommissioned officers and enlisted will also be in charge of areas of base operations.

“Young Soldiers will have to step up and do jobs more suited for senior Soldiers,” said Maddox. “We have mitigated this by allowing junior Soldiers to take on leadership roles to help them gain confidence in their abilities.”

The 201st has had two successful missions to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, but this will be the group’s first mission in Iraq. Although, many of the senior leadership have experience in the Iraqi theater.

According to Maddox, the only difference between the two missions is that the 201st will not be conducting kinetic operations, but there is still plenty of work to be done.

“Mission success will be providing base support to tenant units, to include security, and bringing everyone home,” said Maddox. “All Soldiers will learn new skills and test their ability to operate in jobs many have never performed before. They will come home more confident and with the satisfaction of accomplishing their mission.”
