It was a cool summer morning as the crowd gathered at the start line for the 4th Annual Camp Fuji World Famous Mud Run June 17 on Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji, Japan.

Members of the local and U.S. communities gathered for a morning full of laughing, dancing, and running through mud.

“Getting in the mud and getting dirty is the fun part, but the special part for me is seeing the makeup of these participants,” said Col. Christopher R. Escamilla, commanding officer of CATC Camp Fuji. “We have (participants) from across all of Japan, both Japanese and U.S. citizens, who decided to come out and have fun together and that is just another representation of the strength of our alliance.”

The course consisted of crawling through mud pits, climbing over walls, and running along steep, slick trails. The course challenged everyone who dared to conquer it.

About 440 runners participated in this year’s event. Starting off the morning was the 5-kilometer individual competition, followed by the team competitors and finishing with the fun runners.

The top three winners from each race were awarded various prizes ranging from a Nike bag to a GoPro.

“It was nice for them to open up the base,” said Izumi Bacon, a mud run participant from Yokahama. “After running, we got to eat hamburgers, and see the different culture from the U.S. community.”

After all the adults made it through the grueling course, it was the children’s turn to give it a try. Approximately 80 children took on the hills and mud pits of the course.

Marines from CATC Camp Fuji worked hard in preparation for the event, taking about a week to put the course together.

“In the beginning it was a lot of hard work,” said Cpl. Trevar Garcia, a light armored vehicle Marine with 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division. “But when you realize what you’re doing for everyone and what the outcome is going to be it makes it all worth it.”
