ZAGAN, Poland – Soldiers assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division set up the Tactical Operations Center as a training exercise ‘ready to fight’ in support of Atlantic Resolve, an enduring training exercise between NATO and U.S. Forces June 12, 2018.
“The TOC is the information center that enables the (BDE) commander to make the decision to shift assets at the appropriate time in the battle to the appropriate element,” said Sgt. Maj. Patrick Maurin, 1st ABCT, 1st CD operations Sgt. Maj..
The TOC is a key asset for a brigade-sized element to be fully functional and ‘ready to fight’.
“You can’t influence the battlefield if you can’t talk to anybody,” said Master Sgt. Phillip Cole, 1st ABCT, 1st CD operations sergeant. “Once you can, in a sense, that’s what it means to be ‘ready to fight.’”
The objective of the training exercise is to set up the TOC within an allotted amount of time, for it to be fully functional in a tactical environment and quickly disassembled. The concept ‘move jump move’ allows brigade operations to be fully functional with the ability to observe and supervise movement on the battlefield.
This exercise has been conducted numerous times by the 1st ABCT, 1st CD to ensure this process is proficient and effective. Improvements are constantly being made to reduce the TOC’s set-up and breakdown footprint.
“You have to reduce the footprint,” Maurin said. "The larger the footprint, you can become an enticing target for artillery. What you want to do is decrease the size of your footprint.”
Ideas are discussed and new strategies are continuously implemented in preparation to be ‘ready to fight’ whenever and wherever.
