WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Commander, Navy Region Northwest (NRNW), hosted a change of command ceremony June 20, at Naval Base Kitsap- Bremerton.

Rear Adm. Scott Gray relieved Rear Adm. Gary Mayes, as the officer leading NRNW, which spans 11 states, and is home to more than 190,000 active duty and reserve service members, family members, civilian employees and Navy retirees.

The guest speaker for the change of command was commander, Navy Installations Command, Vice Adm. Mary Jackson and who spoke of what Mayes and NRNW meant to the Navy.

“[Rear Adm. Mayes] has been completely invested in community outreach and the strengthening of community ties both inside and outside the fence line of the Navy in the Northwest Region," said Jackson. "Gary embodies the characteristics we think of when we talk friendship and partnership, whether right here locally, or around his region, his consistent engagement with community leaders and the community-at-large was a daily commitment. He works to critically and strategically important collaboration for our nation right here. Through Gary’s commitment to work with representatives of the surrounding communities, our installations will continue to provide the necessary support and services to sustain the Navy’s readiness now and in the future.”

Mayes gave credit for much of his, and NRNW’s, successes and accomplishments to his staff, local resources and governments, and the Sailors of NRNW, and reminded Rear Adm. Gray that he has many local resources to help him through his new journey as commander, NRNW.

“I have been blessed with officers, civilian managers, Sailors and civilian employees that are the most dedicated, hard working, innovative and, frankly, fun-loving workforce that any admiral could ask for,” said Mayes. To Gray, Mayes said, “Remember you are surrounded by a staff of people who want to help and are second to none. Depend on them and everything will be just fine.”

Mayes was awarded the Legion of Merit medal during the ceremony.

Gray said he looked forward to the opportunity of taking over NRNW, and to the opportunity to work in the region.

“This is my first opportunity to serve in the Northwest, and I am really excited to be here,” said Gray. “I am absolutely thrilled to be back in a position where I can best serve the fleet and our warriors, and it is my highest honor and privilege to serve with this talented team.”

NRNW is home to the Navy’s third largest fleet concentration area, and as an echelon III command reports directly to commander, Navy Installations Command, for the operation and readiness of Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Station Everett, Naval Magazine Indian Island and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island.

Mayes is heading to Washington D.C. next to take over as the in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations as the Director of Energy and Environmental Readiness.
