    Marines Train To Seize Airfield

    NEW JERSEY, UNITED STATES

    06.18.2018

    Story by Cpl. Kent Rollin

    Marine Forces Reserve (MARFORRES)

The Marines were supported by Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 772 and Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 773 to conduct the drill and aimed to clear the area of enemy forces using firearms, tactical maneuvers and combined arms to set up a refueling point.

"During annual training, we get multiple units to come together and conduct joint training to exercise our capabilities in order to support each other for combat operations," said U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Joseph Dugan, Headquarters and Services Company, 2nd Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment scout sniper. "The airfield seizure is just one of many operations that we conduct as an infantry unit."

The Marines gained control of the airfield and set up their perimeter. Marine Wing Support Squadron 472 relieved Company F, and set up a Forward Area Refueling Point as Company F. was ground-extracted.

"It's really important for us, as an infantry company, to be able to integrate with other Marine Corps elements such as aviation," said U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Derek Rey, Company F., 2nd Battalion, 25th Marines Regiment company commander. "We must be able to operate with many different units."

This exercise is crucial because it allows Marines the opportunity to work with different combat elements in order to successfully complete their mission. The airfield seizure allowed the Marines to gain experience working with multiple aviation squadrons.

"I thought it was a successful exercise," said Dugan. "I'm sure there's a bunch of training points to come from it, but we all learn something from these exercises and we had a great time doing it."
