MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marine Corps Community Services Camp Lejeune is hosting a group of professional motocross riders for this year’s Semper Ride at the Main Exchange on Marine Corps Base, June 26 at 8 a.m.
Semper Ride is an event hosted by MCCS, designed to educate Marines on the importance of motorcycle safety through interactive and hands-on exercises.
The event includes classes for Marines that feature guest speakers, slideshows and videos that cover motorcycle safety awareness.
“Just two or three months ago, two Marines were killed on a state road riding recklessly,” said Ron Ferris, Marine Corps Installations East traffic safety manager. “Had they been enjoying their ride safely, they would still be here today.”
According to the ALMAR, 202 Marines and Sailors died in mishaps during the last 30 months with 109 of those occurring while operating a motorcycle or other motor vehicle.
“Commanders rely on small unit leadership to promote a positive safety culture and engage in sensitive conversations in order to effectively communicate with their target audience,” said Ron Sarmento, director of safety for Marine Corps Installations East. “The Safety Department is standing by to help anyone who requires assistance in achieving this goal – we are one team and this is one fight.”
As stated by the ALMAR, the intent to reduce the number of mishap fatalities is a bold and aggressive goal that can only be achieved through a deliberate and continuous focus on actively identifying hazards and making balanced risk decisions through professional planning, briefing, execution and debriefing of every mission.
This event is designed to increase motorcycle riders’ safety, awareness and decision-making. There will be giveaways, displays, demonstrations, interactive exercises, competitive rider experiences, gear discounts and more.
“Instead of putting them in the bleachers, we get them out and participating,” said Ferris. “The bikers capture the audience and they are professionals in a controlled environment. The things that they do are not picked up out on the streets.”
