Civilian employers from across the U. S. received a unique opportunity to witness the capabilities of the Navy Reserve firsthand during the 2018 Navy Employer Recognition Event (NERE) in San Diego, June 22.
NERE honors employers who provide exceptional support for their Reserve Sailor employees. This year's event featured invited guests from 36 companies, universities and civic entities, each selected based on nominations by the Reserve Sailors they employ.
"It's vital we recognize employers who empower Sailors with the time and flexibility needed to accomplish their military duties in defense of the nation," said Vice Adm. Luke M. McCollum, chief of Navy Reserve. "These employers go above and beyond to support their Sailors and, by extension of that service, their nation. We appreciate their participation today witnessing a sample of their Reserve Sailors’ capabilities and contributions.”
The day commenced at Naval Base San Diego with a welcome brief from McCollum, followed by presenting each employer with a certificate of appreciation on the flight deck of USS Omaha (LCS 12) and subsequent tour of the recently commissioned littoral combat ship.
During the recognition event, employers spoke with aviators and aircrew and experienced an up-close look at aircraft assembled at Fleet Logistics Support Squadron (VR) 57 aboard Naval Air Station North Island, Calif. Participants traveled to Naval Amphibious Base Coronado for a Coastal Riverine Squadron (CRS) 1 small boat display and viewed a dynamic demonstration of the combined capabilities of SEAL Team 17, Naval Special Warfare Group (NSWG) 11 and Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 85.
Paul Fitzgerald, Qualcomm Senior Manager of Sourcing said the helicopter operations were the highlight of his visit.
The demonstration included SEAL operators securing a high-value target in a simulated hostile environment while being provided direct close air support by HSC-85.
"Not having a military background, this event gives me a fond appreciation for the dedication, capacity and commitment of the military and the Reservists who serve in the military,” said Fitzgerald. “It is vital that employers understand that Reservists have complex lives. Their sacrifice doesn’t go unnoticed. The Seal Team demonstration was nothing short of remarkable."
NERE 2018 culminated with dinner and reception at the historical, aviation-themed, I-BAR at Naval Air Station North Island.
“Thanks everyone who had a hand coordinating today’s events,” said Fitzgerald. “It was an honor spending a day with the brave men and women of our Armed Forces. Something I will never said forget.”
