JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - The command chief master sergeant of the 176th Wing celebrated more than 38 years of service in the Alaska Air National Guard, holding in his hands retirement order number EK1989 here June 3.
During Chief Master Sgt. David Garganta's military career, he pinned on the entire enlisted rank structure, saw four types of airframes brought to the Wing new from the factory, and worked in every maintenance section.
He became command chief because he wanted to help people, explained retired Col. Patty Wilbanks, the presiding officer of Garganta's retirement ceremony. That simple answer was quintessential of his leadership style.
The full room at the retirement ceremony, standing applause, and line of retirement-gift presenters did not speak enough to the reverence Garganta earned during his service. Characteristically, Garganta himself stopped the procession of public well-wishers early as a show of respect to the Airmen's time.
To Garganta, EK1989 represented more than the culmination of an illustrious career. It meant new opportunities
"If we live in the past, we have no future," Garganta said. "Through all the ups and downs in my career, I wouldn't change a thing. Now I'm going to get busy living."
