MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – With more than 200,000 total personnel in the Marine Corps, maintaining information for each individual Marine is vital to ensuring that all aspects of his or her military career are in order. From managing and updating their training records, to maintaining their family care plans, Marines have instant access to anything and everything pertaining to their personnel matters with the Marine Online (MOL) system.
MOL is an online system that Marines can log into and manage their career, including submitting leave, creating a fitness report, and keeping track of their training. But what happens when your leave request isn’t getting submitted, or your record of emergency data can’t be located?
Answer: You contact the Manpower Information Systems Support Office (MISSO).
“Anything that’s related to MOL and the applications within it, we are responsible for,” said Chief Warrant Officer Wojciech Faryniarz, officer-in-charge, MISSO-03, Marine Corps Installations – West. “If anybody has questions or issues with their MOL, they contact us and we provide them with a solution.”
Located at MCB Camp Pendleton, Calif., MISSO-03 is one of the multiple manpower information support offices across the Marine Corps responsible for assisting units west of the Mississippi River in accurately reporting and retrieving personnel and pay information using the various automated manpower information systems.
“There is over 200 commands that we support - from the five major Installation Personnel Administration Centers (IPAC) to the individual commands that are out there,” said Faryniarz.
Another task that MISSO-03 carries out is traveling to individual command administration sections to provide training for Marines with any MOL-related issues they may encounter.
“We visit every unit and conduct what is called a, ‘site visit’,” said Master Sgt. Victor Juarez, staff non-commissioned officer-in-charge, MISSO-03, Marine Corps Installations – West. “We explain to them major changes that may be happening to MOL, how to implement those changes within their unit and basic classes on programs in MOL. We try to keep them in the loop of what’s happening in the Marine Corps, administratively.”
In total, MISSO-03 is responsible for assisting nearly 100,000 personnel with any issues they may have pertaining to their military profile, and as hectic as that sounds, they manage to execute their mission while only having a total of 11 Marines.
“I have a great staff,” Faryniarz said followed by a gleeful chuckle. “It really comes down to having a good solid routine and these Marines are great.”
Ultimately, MISSO-03 serves as the key link between Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC) and individual commands when it comes to keeping everyone updated on information that can potentially affect their military careers.
“We are in the middle between HQMC and individual commands,” said Faryniarz. “At the same time, our job is to identify and solve problems before they become major problems.”
