Adm. John Aquilino, commander U.S. Pacific Fleet and Adm. Christopher Grady, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, U.S. Naval Forces Northern Command, met with the team at Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC) onboard Naval Base San Diego, June 25. It was Aquilino and Grady’s first visit to the command after taking the helms of Pacific Fleet and Fleet Forces Command.
“Our ability to successfully execute the wide array of assigned complex missions throughout the maritime domain is dependent on a firm foundation of professional competence,” said Aquilino. “It was important for Adm. Grady and I to ensure SMWDC continues to meet our aligned warfighting training requirements and every unit successfully performs to one single high end standard.”
Grady echoed similar sentiments.
“SMWDC continues to drive a rapid and sustainable increase in the warfighting proficiency and capability of the Surface Fleet and our Navy as a whole,” said Grady. “There is an insatiable appetite in the Fleet for the training, TTP and doctrine updates, and direct operational support this team provides reliably in all fleet concentration areas. In just a few short years, SMWDC has become the place to be in the Surface Navy when it comes to the profession of arms in the maritime domain.”
Through its lines of operations – advanced tactical training, doctrine and tactical guidance development, operational support, capability assessments, experimentation and future requirements – SMWDC is driving standardization for training and operations of warfighting proficiency, capability and lethality throughout the Navy.
Rear Adm. Dave Welch, commander of SMWDC, said they have a tremendous team at SMWDC who help provide Sailors this advanced Fleet training, including the surface force’s Warfare Tactics Instructor (WTI) program.
“SMWDC isn’t just a place for junior officers to become WTIs,” he said. “However, it is a place where every member of the team plays a significant role in our mission to increase the lethality and tactical proficiency of the Surface Force across all domains.”
SMWDC is a subordinate command of Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet and exists to increase the lethality and tactical proficiency of the Surface Force across all domains. SMWDC headquarters is at Naval Base San Diego with four divisions in Virginia and California focused on Sea Combat, Integrated Air and Missile Defense, Amphibious Warfare and Mine Warfare.
