FORT BLISS, Texas - Seaman Korissa Lewis is among the best players on the U.S. women’s military soccer team, and has a rather unique background. She is the only player on the team that has never played at the collegiate level.

Her background as a Sailor and soccer player well-qualified her to join the most elite military soccer players in the world as they clashed at Fort Bliss June 22-July 3 at the 2018 Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Women’s Football Championship.
Teams from Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea, and the United States gathered to compete at the 11th iteration of the tournament to earn the title of best female football players in the world.
“I enlisted in the Navy right out of high school and have not been able to play past the high school level,” she said.
She has as a hospital corpsman for the last two and a half years.
Lewis plays soccer at her duty station in Spain, where officers that she works with suggested that she apply to play for the team.
“They encouraged me to fill out an application,” she said.
Lewis spoke about how the experience was an amazing opportunity to represent her country. She added that there were no words to explain playing at this level with women who are extremely talented.
As she is the most junior enlisted member on the team, she has learned and applied her military training to the experience.
“Seeing how leaders work with each other at work helps me have a better attitude in following before learning to lead,” she said.
Lewis plans to use this experience to play for team USA in the future.
“I am learning from the women who have played before to hopefully play in the future so I can use some of these leadership skills,” she said.
Supporting your country while playing the sport that you love contributes a lot to morale, said Lewis.
This feeling follows closely with the CISM motto: “Friendship through Sports”. It is a huge morale boost to meet new people who love the same things - soccer and their country, she related.
Lewis will return to Roda, Spain as a Hospital Corpsman at the conclusion of the championship.
