FORT BLISS, Texas – Before Senior Airman Jessica Ortiz-Villa was in the United States Air Force, she was a little girl who loved soccer. She recalls being the only girl on the field while playing as a child in Mexico.
Now, she plays among women from all over the world at the 2018 Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Women’s Football Championship.
A coach from her local command in Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana recognized her talent and suggested she try out for the U.S. team.
“I just love the game. I love to play soccer and I just want to keep doing it until I can’t move anymore,” Ortiz-Villa said.
Ortiz-Villa recalls what ignited the passion for soccer in her when she was eight years old.
“My dad was a soccer player himself and wanted to follow his footsteps. I fell in love with the game and it has created so many opportunities and amazing moments,” Ortiz-Villa said.
She played in Mexico, Canada, and various places in Nebraska and Iowa earning experiences and accolades that eventually led to her trying out for the 2016 CISM team in France.
Now returning to the CISM environment she expressed eagerness to be among this year’s chosen players.
“I am very grateful to be here. No other team compares. This is our year,” Ortiz-Villa said.
The 11th CISM Women’s Football Championship, held at Fort Bliss, Texas June 22 - Jul 3, 2018 featured nine teams playing for the title of best female military football players in the world. The countries competing were Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea and the United States.
