FORT BLISS, Texas – Being a good battle buddy led Army 2nd Lt. Pamela Wishart to an opportunity of a lifetime.

Wishart agreed to help when a friend and former teammate from the United States Military Academy called Wishart, who was stationed at Fort Bliss, and asked for a ride from the airport. She stumbled upon a the opportunity of a lifetime.

“After I picked her up and dropped her off at the practice, I stood around watching the girls play and became interested,” Wishart said. “I was really impressed by the high level they were playing at. I was intrigued and wanted to know how I could be a part of that.”

Wishart was witnessing the camp trails for the 2018 Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM) World Military Women’s Football Championship. 40 service members tried out, while only 21 were selected for the final team.

The coach noticed her interest and invited her to try out. Her chain of command approved her participation the following day.

“The experience has been one of a kind and truly remarkable. The camp has been competitive and extremely fun,” Wishart said.

While it’s lot of fun to playing the game she loves, there are also aspects of the military structure that carry over to the field.

“We have all been playing the game since we were little so I think the sport has taught us these things throughout the years,” Wishart said. “I think the sport helped us form the military aspect and now the military is helping us form the sport aspect.”

The women come from diverse backgrounds and duty stations around the world but they all expressed pride in wearing USA Jerseys like they were U.S. military uniforms.

“A large part of the military doesn’t even know that this program exists and it’s important to get the word out, said Wishart. “It was such as awesome feeling to wear this jersey with USA on it!”
The 11th CISM Women’s Football Championship, held at Fort Bliss, Texas June 22 - Jul 3, 2018 featured nine teams playing for the title of best female military football players in the world. The countries competing were Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Netherlands, South Korea and the United States.
