TSC San Diego Celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month

Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego observed Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month with a cake cutting June 29.

Throughout the month of June, the Navy joins the nation in observing LGBT month in recognition of the service and dedication of the men and women who contribute their diverse skills, perspectives, talents and backgrounds to strengthen One Navy Team.

“LGBT Pride Month represents much more than sexual orientation,” said Machinist’s Mate 1st Class Aljay German. “It represents a stand for equality and the right to celebrate an individual’s true identity.”

Sailors from the TSC San Diego diversity committee discussed historical gay rights activists and significant milestones the nation reached in support of equal rights for the LGBT community. Topics included contributions made by gay rights leaders including Frank Kameny and Air Force Tech. Sgt. Leonard Matlovich and the 2011 repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy enabling gay, lesbian and bisexuals to openly serve in the armed forces.

“We’ve made a tremendous amount of progress on our social issues,” said TSC San Diego Commanding Officer Capt. Michael Feyedelem. “So today – celebrate. Celebrate that members of the LGBT community can serve openly. Celebrate that our Navy and country are stronger for this. Celebrate that every day, we are getting closer to a world where we are all simply ’persons,’ and we’re not identified by our race, color, gender, or sexual orientation.”
