CAMP COURTNEY, Okinawa, Japan – Maj. Gen. Craig Timberlake relinquished his duties as the Commanding General of the 3rd Marine Division to Brig. Gen. William Jurney, during a change of command ceremony today.
Timberlake has served as the Commanding General of the CALTRAP Nation since June of 2017 and will retire after 41 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps.
During the ceremony, Timberlake thanked everyone who contributed to the success of 3rd Marine Division under his command.
“It is the Marines, Sailors, Soldiers and family members of 3rd Marine Division that make it great,” said Maj. Gen. Craig Q. Timberlake, off-going commanding general of the 3rd Marine Division, “There is no prouder moment within my 41 years of service than when I joined CALTRAP nation.”
Brig. Gen Jurney assumes command of the Division after serving his previous tour as both the Commanding General of Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego and Western Recruiting Region.
“I am new to the team and I am new to the Okinawa, but I am no stranger to the Division mission.” said Brig. Gen Jurney on-coming commanding general of 3rd Marine Division.
3rd Marine Division is the only continuously forward-deployed division in the Marine Corps. Their mission is to conduct amphibious, forcible entry operations or sustained, combined arms land operations with strategic partners and allies as an integral part of III Marine Expeditionary Force within the Pacific Theater Area of Operations in support of national security objectives.
