Story by Sgt. Carlos Cruz Jr.

    1st Marine Corps District

Battles that are won, start from within. Being introduced to military sponsored programs brought out self-confidence and motivation that James Hanna didn’t even know he had.
Hanna, a senior at Tech Freire Charter School, who lived a sedentary lifestyle for a majority of his life is now getting ready to attend the Marine Corps Recruiting Command Summer Leadership and Character Development Academy in July.
Hanna said that in the past he didn’t get out much. He was the type to stay home, eat and play video games.
“When I was 13, my life was a big mess. I was obese, had no friends, didn't exercise or play sports, I felt as if I had no purpose in life,” said James Hanna.
This lifestyle of his continued for a while until one day, while at the doctor’s office with his mom, his therapist mentioned the Navy Sea Cadet program. He signed up and has been in the program since then.
According to Hanna, after being introduced to the Marine Corps through the program his life changed… “I am 16 years old now and my life is better than before.”
His father, William Hanna, did not want James to join any part of the military because it is against his beliefs, but he said he respects his son for knowing what he wants to do with his life and has seen the impact it has had on him.
“There has been a great change within him, I’m happy for that,” said William Hanna. “He’s more in order, better at time managing, more persistent and his personality made a 180 degree turn. I commend him for that.”
Hanna found out about SLCDA through an Instagram post. He said he applied to it over other summer programs because it is hosted by the Marine Corps.
“I expect to get a different perspective of leadership than I’ve already been taught and what I’ve learned on my own,” said Hanna. “And I expect that because when you look at a Marine you see the professionality and leadership quality in them.”
Hanna plans on becoming a U.S. Marine after high school and putting all the leadership skills and experience he has gotten into good use.
