ILLESHEIM, GERMANY (July 2, 2018) – The 4th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB), 4th Infantry Division assumed rotational aviation brigade responsibilities during a Hand Over/Take Over ceremony with 1st Air Cavalry Brigade (ACB), 1st Cavalry Division at Illesheim Army Airbase, Germany, on July 2, symbolizing the official start of the brigade’s deployment to Europe.

4th CAB is supporting U.S. Army Europe's Operation Atlantic Resolve, with units in numerous NATO partnered countries, providing opportunities to train alongside allies and demonstrating America's commitment to peace and stability in the region.

Brig. Gen. Ross Coffman, commanding general, Atlantic Resolve Mission Command Element, expressed his awe in all of 1st ACB’s work over the past nine months and the high expectations he has for 4th CAB.

"1st ACB crews flew over 9,800 hours during which they conducted over 20 air assaults, over 70 mission requests and conducted nearly 400 gunneries. All said in total, they sent over half a million rounds down range,” said Coffman.

Col. Cain Baker, commander, 1st ACB, thanked local community leaders for all of their support and pride in the soldiers of 1st ACB.

Col. Scott Gallaway, commander, 4th CAB, spoke of his excitement at all the opportunities available to the unit during these next nine months and his eagerness to train and improve.

"The 4th Combat Aviation Brigade has trained hard for this mission and we are ready,” said Gallaway.

This is the third brigade-sized rotational aviation unit to support Operation Atlantic Resolve. 4th CAB’s deployed assets, once its final squadron arrives at the end of July, will total approximately 1,700 Soldiers, 1,500 individual pieces of equipment and 88 aircraft.

The majority of helicopters and personnel will be stationed in Germany with a forward presence in Latvia, Romania and Poland.

The ceremony marked the official hand over of responsibilities from 1st ACB to 4th CAB, but 4th CAB had already begun flight operations in Europe as of June 14th. Training events are scheduled throughout Europe during the unit’s nine-month rotation.

“With terrain and weather that differs greatly from Fort Carson, Colorado, Europe provides aircrews from 4th CAB with an even broader experience,” says Cpt. Mike Clanton, AH-64 pilot. “Our experience flying in high altitudes in the Rocky Mountains will be extremely beneficial for flights in and around the Alps.
