Team members from the Family Advocacy Program hosted a Kids on Wheels Parade as a part of child abuse prevention at Patriot Park here, April 28.
Approximately 100 Joint Base MDL community members attended the parade where children participated in arts and crafts activities such as bicycle and rock decorating and face painting all in an effort to highlight programs offered by Family Advocacy.
“Our goal was to have a family-friendly event where parents and kids could come out, have a good time together and maybe get to know other families across the base to increase their connectivity,” said Bernadette Peace, Family Advocacy Program intervention specialist. “Also, to have a very positive interaction with Family Advocacy and give us an opportunity to talk about our programs.”
Peace said a big part of the program is reaching out to support service members and their families. Throughout the parade, staff members handed out informational pamphlets to educate the community on the resources available like counseling, anger management classes and new parent support programs.
“The parade was very successful,” said Peace. “We wanted this to be a visual event to bring awareness to child abuse prevention and every station was popular.”
Peace said the Family Advocacy staff plans to make the Kids on Wheels Parade an annual event during the month of April.
“Family Advocacy has a stigma attached to it; that we only deal with people who abuse their children or spouses,” said Peace. “We want to let the community know Family Advocacy is bigger than that and there’s so much more support that we can give to every active duty member and their families.”
