Multi-National Division – Baghdad
BAGHDAD – Today's Soldier in Focus is 1st Sgt. Robert Herfel, senior enlisted advisor for Golf Company, 299th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Multi-National Division – Baghdad, which is the service battery for 1st Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment.
He grew up in Soldier's Grove, Wis., where his parents, Carol and Delmer Herfel, still live. He went to North Crawford High School and earned his bachelor's degree from Central Texas University. Herfel comes from a long line of military history so it was no surprise that he chose the Army as his career. He had two grandfathers who fought in World War II. One of them also fought in Korea. He is currently serving on his fourth combat tour and his third trip to Iraq.
He supervises the operations and training of 135 Soldiers and is responsible for the maintenance of all mechanical equipment used by 1st Bn., 7th FA Regt. He said the most difficult part of this deployment was ensuring that the 80 new Soldiers assigned to his unit were trained to standard on combat operations along with knowing their jobs before leaving Fort Riley, Kan.
During his spare time, he enjoys woodworking and said he is thankful for all the nice things that make life a little better here on Camp Liberty, to include the Post Exchange and living quarters. He appreciates the support from his family and the American people and cannot wait to get home to his wife and children.
