The 48th Fighter Wing conducted a change of command ceremony here July 16.

More than 400 Airmen, distinguished guests from local communities, and Royal Air Force partners gathered to witness Col. William Marshall assume command of the Liberty Wing from Col. Evan Pettus.

Under Pettus’ leadership, Liberty Wing Airmen generated more than 21,000 sorties and 46,000 flying hours, deployed to 26 countries, provided critical support to several contingency operations and paved the way for Lakenheath to become the first permanent overseas home of U.S. F-35A Lightning IIs.

“Evan, you’ve taken the Liberty Wing to new heights, forged through arduous challenges and continued its legacy” said Lt. Gen. Richard M. Clark, 3rd Air Force commander and presiding official for the ceremony. “Thank you for your laser focus leadership and your daily commitment to the Airmen of this wing.”

Pettus, who will become the Air Command and Staff College Commandant at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. thanked the Airmen in attendance during his farewell.

“I’d like to say thank you to the true heroes of today, the men and women of the Liberty Wing,” said Pettus. “You’ve made all the difference, and you’ve lifted this team to incredible heights. I’ll always be in awe of the things I saw you do and cherish the stories I have to tell.”

Prior to his assignment to the Liberty Wing, Marshall was the commander of the 332nd Expeditionary Operations Group.

“I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to lead this wing,” said Col. Marshall. “I have seen first-hand and up-close the professionalism and results the Airman of this wing produce, and I look forward to continuing to do that for combat commanders, our nation and our allies, with your help.”
