Story by 1st Lt. Ellen Brabo

    2d Cavalry Regiment

Surrounded by family, friends, members of the local community, partners and allies, and members of the regiment, Col. Patrick J. Ellis relinquished command to Col. Thomas M. Hough during a change of command ceremony for the 2d Cavalry Regiment at Rose Barracks, Germany, July 20, 2018.

“I frequently get asked what it’s like to command the 2d Cavalry Regiment,” said Ellis. “After a while I started running out of superlatives to describe the incredible experience it is and started explaining it this way: It’s a great unit, in a great location, at a great point in history.”

They say numbers don’t lie. Over the last two years, under the command of Ellis, 2CR has produced 99 Expert Infantry Badge awardees, 10 U.S. Army Ranger School graduates, 18 master gunners, 14 Stryker master gunners and 630 Basic Leaders Course graduates. 2CR successfully completed three rotations at the Battle Group Poland supporting NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence initiative and four multinational training exercises – Saber Junction 17, Saber Guardian 17, Noble Partner 17 and Saber Strike 18.

These events provided ground breaking opportunities for the regiment and the U.S. Army through road marches extending beyond 2,000-kilometers on more than one occasion, fielding the U.S. Army’s most lethal Stryker gun system – the new 30mm Stryker Infantry Carrier Vehicle Dragoon - executing a forward passage of lines and multiple wet gap crossings, just to name a few. For the first time in 42 years, the regiment conducted live fire exercises from the troop to the squadron level.

“None of this could have happened without a passionate trainer leading a team of warfighting professionals,” said Brig. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, commanding general, 7th Army Training command.

Hough, an infantry officer with experience ranging from platoon leader to battalion command, comes to the regiment from 7th ATC where he served as the strategic planner. He has served with the likes of the 101st Airborne Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 18th Airborne Corps Long Range Surveillance and the 10th Mountain Division. Hough is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, U.S. Army School of Advanced Military Studies and the Joint Advanced Warfighter School.

“Frankly, he is prepared and well selected for this command,” said LaNeve. “Having worked on the mission command restructure for the last few months, I am sure he is ready to lead this formation.”
