MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (July 26, 2018) – U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Col. Kevin Campbell former commanding officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, relinquished his command to Lt. Col. Jason Kaufmann, commanding officer of H&HS, during a change of command ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, July 26, 2018.
Marine, Sailors and other station personnel gathered to see Kaufmann take command of the squadron.
Under Campbell’s command, the squadron accomplished tasks such as handling the unprecedented growth that the base has gone through, increasing air traffic control operations and improving oversight and support for the air station.
“I would say the largest thing that the Marines and Sailors have accomplished is rising to the occasion of managing the mission of expanding in great form,” said Campbell. “Even on the negative side, incidents from out in town have gone down dramatically since I assumed command. They’ve treated other Marines with respect and professionalism, they acted like professionals in town and have been great neighbors to the Japanese public.”
During the ceremony, U.S. Marine Corps Col. Richard Fuerst, commanding officer of MCAS Iwakuni, presented Campbell with a Meritorious Service Medal for his service and leadership aboard the air station.
At the end of the ceremony, Kaufmann said that he has many positive goals for the squadron to set in the future.
“(The) bottom line is operational excellence,” said Kaufmann. “I want my Marines to lead, I want my Marines to win and I want my Marine to balance. When I say I want them to win, I want them to win not only as Marines but I want them to win at life.”
