Marines with Marine Wing Communications Squadron (MWCS) 48, conducted a field training exercise involving organic, terrestrial and satellite communications capabilities at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, June 14 to 18.
This annual training field exercise for the reserve unit MWCS–48, exists to challenge the Marines, keep their minds sharp and make performing these difficult tasks second nature.
"The purpose of this exercise is to bring the members of the unit together so the geo-dispersed units can build rapport with each other while increasing technical proficiency in all the various military occupational specialties," said Capt. Corey Winters, company commander of MWCS-48.
The exercise took place in three locations, two of which were on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and the third was on MCAS Miramar. The Marines set up central connecting points or nodes, to connect the three locations via satellite, enabling each group of MWCS-48 Marines to have constant, single-channel contact with the Marines in the exercise’s aviation combat element on Camp Pendleton.
During the exercise, noncommissioned officers with MWCS-48 gave communication classes to their junior Marines as well as practiced setting up communication equipment while incorporating physical exercise to simulate stress and exhaustion. The class taught necessary skills and the communications set-up drills combined with physical activity tested the Marines and taught them to concentrate even when exhausted.
"This radio training environment stresses the Marines mentally and physically to challenge our minds and put us in that combat mindset," said Staff Sgt. Blake Dudek, transmissions chief with MWCS-48.
"When you go to combat, you're going to be constantly, physically and mentally exhausted, and we have to be able to set up communications in those circumstances."
