FORT DRUM, N.Y. (July 27, 2018) -- More than 500 Fort Drum community members got pretty in pink, bathed in blue and were going green at Division Hill on July 26 when they were showered in bright colors during the Color the Mountain fun run.

Bursts of colored powder greeted them at several stations throughout the two-mile course, and participants were given shirts, sunglasses and other accessories for a safe and spirited run.

Hosted by the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation staff, the annual color run is a popular summer event at Fort Drum. Justin LaClair, age 10, has ran it four times.

“I just like running,” he said. “This was really fun.”

This time, he ran with his mother, brother and grandmother. James McDaniel ran it with his wife and two children. He said it was the first time they’ve ever signed up for a run before.

“It was a good workout and the kids really loved it,” he said. “My son is turning six and my daughter is turning two, and I wanted to do something that was going to be fun for them. This was definitely fun.”

Gia Gillotte-Taylor, Fort Drum BOSS adviser, said that it was gratifying to see so many families attending this event together, and that there were many more children running than in years past.

“Today was all about having a good time and getting our Soldiers and Family Members together to have fun,” she said. “Even our volunteers had a great time throwing colors on the runners, throwing colors on each other, so it was a really good event.

The Fort Drum BOSS Soldiers will host a Run Forrest Run 5K, starting at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 10, to get people excited about the Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band concert scheduled at Division Hill on Aug. 24. They are also busy planning the next Mountain Mudder.
