The employees of Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., took the initiative to recognize the achievements of Col. Sekou S. Karega, the outgoing base commander, July 17.

The recognition took place during the Quarterly Awards breakfast at the Maj. Gen. James L. Day Conference Center.

Usually, this is the time when the commanding officer recognizes the achievements of individuals and departments who have contributed to the advancement of the base and its mission.

Several employees and departments were singled out by Karega for their dedication and expertise in contributing to the success of MCLB Barstow.

Among them were the Supervisor of the 3rd Quarter 2018, Harrison Rogers, the Facility Services director for the Public Works Department; Marine of the Quarter Lance Cpl. Brendan C. McDowell, construction wireman, S-6 Communications Department; Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter Sgt. Rudy Hernandez III, fuel accounting, S-4 Supply Division; and Employees of the Quarter Michael Reyes, physical security specialist, S-7 Security and Emergency Services Department; David Cortez, system administrator, S-6 Communications Department; and Jenna Bryan, volunteer, Marine Corps Community Services.

Nancy Johnson, customer service, S-6 Communications Department, was also recognized for her 30 years of Federal service.

When the applause died down, Danny Strand, director, S-7 SES, took the opportunity to recognize Karega for the awards his leadership over the past three years was responsible for accruing to MCLB Barstow, and the list was lengthy.

    Those awards included:
    • 2015 Commission on Fire Accreditation International Accreditation Agency Award
    • 2016 Commander in Chief's Annual Award for Installation Excellence. The award named MCLB Barstow as the best installation in the entire Marine Corps and one of the five best installations in the United States military.
    • 2016 Department of the Navy Excellence in Safety Award
    • 2016 Commandant of the Marine Corps Warrior Preservation Award
    • 2017 Occupational Safety and Health Administration voluntary VPP Certification Plaque
    • 2017 United States Marine Corps Medium Fire Department of the Year Award
    • 2018 Voluntary Protection Program Star Worksite Flag
    • 2018 Marine Corps Achievement in Safety Award
    • 2016, 2017 Secretary of the Navy’s Environmental Award
    • 2017, 2018 Secretary of Defense Environmental Award
    • 2016, 2017, 2018 High Desert Law Enforcement Shooting Competition Award

“There were many individual achievement awards handed out during the CO’s time here,” Strand told the audience, “but these were the unit wards that were a direct result of his leadership, and for that, sir, we salute you.”

Following the applause, Karega praised the employees and Marines of the base.

“(The CINC) award is because of the contribution of everybody here and everybody on this base,” he said. “I couldn’t do it alone. The CINC award is because of your work and you made it happen.”

Before moving on to Camp Mujuk, South Korea, Karega’s next permanent change of station, he left parting words of appreciation.

“I want to thank each and every one of you for everything you’ve done to make this command successful and to make this tour very, very, enjoyable for me.”
