ROATAN, Honduras (NNS) -- USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) and Commander, Destroyer Squadron (CDS) 40 hosted Chief of the Honduran Staff Capt. Jose Jorge Fortin and members of the Honduran Navy and Marines for a one-day key leader engagement (KLE), July 23.
Gunston Hall is deployed in support of Southern Seas 2018. The deployment focuses on strengthening the United States’ existing regional partnerships and encouraging the establishment of new relationships through the exchange of maritime mission focused knowledge and expertise.
“Our meeting served as a great opportunity for the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps to highlight our current missions with our partners in Central America,” said Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 40 Commodore Capt. Brian Diebold. “The Southern Seas deployment provides us opportunities such as this visit to discuss the future of multi-national integration with the Honduran Navy.”
Five members of the Honduran Navy embarked Gunston Hall via small boat. They spent roughly three hours on board touring the ship, speaking with Marines and Sailors and learning more about U.S. Navy assets.
Concurrent with the KLE, USS Gunston Hall also hosted a subject matter expert exchange (SMEE) on board to discuss Honduran Navy and US Navy senior enlisted leadership and the role of senior enlisted leaders in the day-to-day operations.
Southern Seas is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored and U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet-conducted deployment focused on subject matter expert exchanges with partner nation militaries and security forces in the Caribbean, Central and South America.
