Coast Guard responds to two vessels in distress off Hawaii
HONOLULU— The Coast Guard responded to a dismasted sailboat off Honolulu and a sinking recreational vessel off Waialae Beach Park, Sunday.
A Station Honolulu 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew is currently towing the dismasted sailboat back to Ala Wai Boat Harbor while a Station Kauai RB-M crew was able to evacuate the sole crewmember aboard the sinking recreational vessel before it submerged.
There are no reports of injuries in either incident. A Hazard to Navigation notice has been released regarding the submerged vessel as it is drifting below the surface. The Coast Guard National Response Center is consulting on a response to the submerged vessel. The maximum pollution potential of the submerged boat is 60 gallons of gasoline.
At 3 p.m., Hawaii Emergency Services notified Sector Honolulu watchstanders of a 911 call regarding a 17-foot recreational vessel sinking off Poipu, Kauai.
The Station Kauai RB-M crew was launched to render assistance. Once the crewmember was safe aboard the RB-M they were then able to collect any debris from the vessel and return to Kauai.
Shortly after at 3:30 p.m., Sector Honolulu watchstanders received a distress call on VHF-FM Channel 16 from the crew of a 38-foot sailboat dismasted and disabled off Honolulu. A Station Honolulu RB-M crew deployed in response to the incident. The responders were able to assist the mariners to recover the mast and put the sailboat in tow.
The weather at the time the cases was reportedly winds of 15-mph and seas to 5-feet.
