    Lt. Col. Matt Rasmussen, commander of 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, handed over his command to Lt. Col. Donald R. Neal Jr. during a change of command ceremony at Watkins Field here, July 26, 2018.

    Col. Jay Miseli, commander 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, praised Rasmussen for his extraordinary leadership as the Buffalo's commander.

    “Matt, you provided extraordinary leadership and the great Soldiers and leaders assembled in front of us provided exceptional effort,” said Miseli. “You are leaving an amazing legacy in the Buffalos of calm, positive, and excellent leadership coupled with absolute mission accomplishment.”

    Rasmussen was thankful for having the opportunity to command the Buffalos and recognized them for all of their hard work and sacrifices.

    “To think that I had the opportunity to command this fine battalion made up of Soldiers from all across this country, to train with them in tough conditions, and to have success in so many different venues,” said Rasmussen. “These are Soldiers and leaders who understand their purpose; to fight and destroy the enemy by means of fire and maneuver, and they are ready.”

    Miseli looked to the incoming commander to lead and be prepare for the challenges and opportunities of the months ahead.

    “Your experience, knowledge and expertise have earned you the opportunity to be part of the amazing history and legacy of the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment,” said Miseli. “Now it is time to apply that expertise, leadership, and commitment to excellence to the Buffalos as you take command.”

    Neal was honest about his return to the battalion where he served as a young lieutenant.

    “To the Buffalos, I want you to know I am incredibly humbled and honored to be serving the Buffalos again,” said Neal. “It was this battalion that taught me will, skill, and teamwork are the necessary ingredients in any formation to be successful and win.”
