Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMS LANT) participated in a Groundbreaking Ceremony on Norfolk Naval Station, to officially commence the P913 site project of NCTAMS LANT’s new building. The ceremony was conducted Thursday, July 26 at 9 a.m. across from the base’s parade field where the new building will be located.
Capt. Jody H. Grady, commanding officer, NCTAMS LANT, was the presiding officer for the ceremony. Vice Adm. Brian B. Brown, commander, Naval Information Forces, attended the ceremony along with Capt. Adam C. Lyons, Fleet Cyber Command representative, Mr. Jeffrey W. Ganthner, Principal/Mid-Atlantic Manager, Burns & McDonnell and Mr. Ron Eisenberg, Senior Vice-President, Whiting-Turner.
“NCTAMS LANT is a critical piece of the fleet, providing day-to-day operational support for our communication systems,” said Brown. “It’s fitting that the Navy renews its investment in Naval communications with this building.”
Grady shared, “The beginning of this construction is the result of a ton of hard work by a lot of good people. Their work is greatly appreciated. Communications is the cornerstone of effective operations. This new building will be the cornerstone of communications in the Navy for decades to come. This is a good day for the Navy.”
NCTAMS LANT officially stood up April 19, 1991 when NARDAC and NAVCAMS LANT merged together bringing the ADP and telecommunications disciplines together. Since then, NCTAMS LANT has been no stranger to evolving changes through the years from changes in our chain of command both up and down the chain, to changes in our systems and equipment, as well as, the ever changing technologies in the way we communicate.
Mr. Archie Campbell has been a working at NCTAMS LANT since 1986. He has personally seen many changes here at NCTAMS LANT through the years. Campbell said, “I have seen this command go from a master station to a detachment back to a master station. I got to work with Carl Brashear, the first African-American Navy master diver who completed much of his career with an amputated right leg after a diving accident. I have seen rooms filled with equipment wall-to-wall at one time and then the same rooms with hardly any equipment in them doing the same mission and more. I cannot imagine what the new NCTAMS facility will be like.”
NCTAMS LANT’s new building is projected to be completed in 2022. It will be three stories high, 158,349 square foot long. It will finally bring the network Operations Center, Tech Control, and Message Center under one roof which will provide for a more effective collaboration and improve our Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection capabilities. The building will be surrounded with a ring of oak trees that have been on the base for almost 100 years.
NCTAMS LANT’s mission is to operate and defend responsive, resilient, and secure computer and telecommunications systems, providing information superiority for global maritime and joint forces.
Not only does the command function as a major information and processing node, but it also serves as the regional headquarters for 46 activities and base communications offices located up and down the East Coast as far west as North Dakota, and overseas in Djibouti, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Iceland, Sicily, Spain, and Greece. One reserve unit also provides support to NCTAMS LANT. The 2,505 military, Department of Navy civilians, and contractors working within the NCTAMS LANT region directly support more than 5,396 shore commands and 106 ships home-ported along the East Coast and the Gulf of Mexico and deployed around the world.
Capt. Grady concluded, “I am proud to say that even though I won’t get to move in to the building, I get to be here the day we start the next leg of Naval communication which will be right here behind me.”
