Capt. Homer Denius, relieved Capt. Vince Baker as commanding officer of NSA Annapolis. Rear Adm. Charles Rock, commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, served as guest speaker, congratulated Baker on his performance as commanding officer and welcomed Denius to the Naval District Washington family.
“Capt. Baker has had the pleasure of commanding NSA Annapolis, which hosts the Navy’s flagship educational institution, the U.S. Naval Academy,” said Rock. “Although, I’m not a Naval Academy graduate, one of the things I’ve learned over the last few years as commandant of Naval District Washington, is that this is really a special place.”
Under Baker’s leadership, NSA Annapolis hosted more than 4,000 Midshipmen, more than 6,000 employees and more than two million visitors a year. Additionally, NSA Annapolis maintained all facilities which included over 120 aging historic buildings and associated infrastructure that must be maintained to National Historic Registry site standards.
“Installation command is not something that I aspired to,” said Baker. “As a surface warfare officer I never even considered it as an option, but the Navy is ripe with opportunity. When this opportunity came knocking I jumped on it. I had no idea what the scope and responsibilities were and the learning curve is very steep. In fact, I’m still learning every day. But as it turns out, this is the best job I’ve ever had and it’s because of the staff and Sailors. Today I’d like to thank the staff and Sailors of NSA Annapolis, because you’re the ones who made all of the successes over the last couple of years possible.”
Denius, a native of Tallahassee, Florida, was previously commander, Amphibious Squadron Three onboard both Essex Amphibious Ready Group and America Amphibious Ready Group. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1994 and earned a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies with distinction from the Naval War College Newport, RI. As commanding officer of NSA Annapolis, Denius says he is looking to help those serving under him reach their personal and professional goals.
“I want to recognize the immense talent and dedication of the Sailors and civilians of NSA Annapolis,” said Denius. “In my short time here, I have found there is not a more competent, loyal and selfless body of men and women entrusted with the safety and operations of a command. Each and every one of you is individually to our success, the success of the Naval Academy and therefore the future of our country. I ask each of you to continue to be the professionals I know that you are and represent the Navy with pride.”
