FORT IRWIN, Calif. – 2nd Lt. Matthew Baughman, the platoon leader of 1st Platoon, A Company, 1st Battalion, 111th Infantry Regiment, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division, Pennsylvania Army National Guard is leading his unit through a rotation at the National Training Center here August 4-18.

“I’m excited to see how my platoon will handle this training environment. This is one of the best training environments the Army has to offer and I’m confident it will validate this unit’s strength,” said Baughman.

He added that NTC is the ideal place to validate infantry tactics and maneuvers.

“This is our final culminating exercise for a year of training, so we’ve been working to integrate our tactics in the teams and squads to the platoon level so we can integrate at higher levels in our command and with other units,” he said.

Baughman has been in the Pennsylvania National Guard for one year as an infantry officer and previously served in the Vermont National Guard as an enlisted Soldier.

“Being in the Pennsylvania National Guard has offered me many opportunities, like money for college, the chance to commission, and leadership skills that transfer into my civilian life where it helps with my civilian job working with at-risk youth,” said Baughman.

Baughman concluded that his experience in the National Guard has made him better able to read people, more conscientious, better at managing his time, and fundamentally a better leader.
