MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan (Aug. 6, 2018) – USA Softball Women’s National Team visited Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan and Iwakuni City, Japan, July 27-Aug. 1, 2018.

The team visited MCAS Iwakuni in order to prepare for the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women’s World Championship where they are scheduled to compete in order to defend the title of world champions and qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Iwakuni City has been selected to host the U.S. teams training for and during the 2020 Olympics and co-hosted the U.S. softball team alongside MCAS Iwakuni as they prepared for the world championship.

“Late last year we started receiving communications from several cities in Japan who were wanting to host us for the training camp for the world championship this year as well as the 2020 Olympic Games,” said Chris Sebren, the director of national teams for USA Softball. “Iwakuni had so much more to offer than the other cities that we were looking at. All of the other cities had great amenities, facilities and things like that, but when it came to Iwakuni, the people and the opportunities with the Marine Corps Air Station, it just outweighed everything that was available and that’s why we chose here.”

The team spent their time at Iwakuni practicing, participating in a cultural softball exchange with Japanese and American children, meeting with Iwakuni City leaders and playing a double-header softball game with the Japanese Toyota Red Terriers softball team. The U.S. team won both double header games with final scores of 8-1 and 10-3.

The game was held at Kizuna Stadium, a joint-use baseball stadium at the Atago sports complex in Iwakuni City.

“Coming to Iwakuni and playing Toyota in these practice games and spending all this time practicing here at the stadium is so huge for us because it gives us that extra step that we need of preparation (for the world championship games),” said Monica Abbott, a pitcher for USA Softball Women’s National Team.
