Col. Jeffrey Menasco assumed command of the 317th Airlift Wing at Dyess Air Force Base, Aug. 3, 2018.
Maj. Gen. Sam Barrett, 18th Air Force commander, presided over the ceremony and discussed what Menasco has to look forward to while he leads the 317th AW.
“Your Airmen are talented, innovative and brave,” said Barrett. “Any adversary in the world, whether they’re big or small, knows one thing about the 317th AW: we fly, we fight and we always win.”
Barrett went on to talk about the trust he has in Menasco’s ability to lead the 317th.
“He is an expert officer, a leader, and he’s a seasoned and skilled aviator,” said Barrett.
“Jeff, the guidon is light, but the burden of command is heavy. I have confidence that you will continue the success that you’ve had and propagate it to the Airmen of this wing,” Barret said to Menasco.
In 1994, Menasco earned his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps from California State University Sacramento. He began his career as an intelligence officer in the 510th Fighter Squadron, Aviano Air Base, Italy, during the Balkan campaigns. His previous command positions include the 36th Airlift Squadron, Yokota AB, Japan, and the 86th Operations Group commander, Ramstein AB, Germany. He is a command pilot with more than 2,900 flying hours with combat time over Bosnia, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I am so excited to have the opportunity to lead the 317th Airlift Wing,” said Menasco. “I look forward to executing the mission of the 317th, as well as taking care of our Airmen and their families.”
The 317th AW maintains and operates 28 C-130J Super Hercules at home station and overseas in support of the United States and its allies. The wing actively supports operations in every theatre of military operations, as well as humanitarian efforts worldwide.
