ASHEVILLE, NC – The North Carolina National Guard’s Field Maintenance Shop (FMS) #1 received the Secretary of the Army Environmental Award at the Asheville Armory on August 3, 2018. Mr. Jordan Gillis, the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, presented the award to the FMS #1 team.

The Secretary of the Army Environmental Awards represent the highest honor in the field of environmental science and sustainability presented by the Army.

Among their many environmental accomplishments, Mr. Gillis highlighted FMS #1’s commitment to ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’ that diverted over 15 tons (39,173 lbs.) of materials from landfills annually, the equivalent of about 185 refrigerators. The FMS #1 exceeding the N.C. National Guard objective of 10 percent energy use reduction to 45 percent reduction. The shop using gel cell batteries that are environmentally sensitive and help avoid acid leaks.

“I’m extremely proud of FMS #1 and the N.C. Army National Guardsmen, Soldiers and Civilians alike, who have taken an active role in environmental stewardship getting you where you are now, reducing our blueprint in the environment,” said Jordan Gillis, the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment. “Your efforts today positions the Army to do great things from 2025 and beyond. I applaud your dedication, all your efforts, and hard work.”

These achievements demonstrate exemplary efforts in implementing innovative technologies, green remediation, endangered species protection, historic preservation, environmental restoration and sustainability.

Nine Guardsmen staff FMS #1; three of them oversee day-to-day compliance and quality issues. They coordinate with supported NCNG units for equipment rehabilitation, hazardous and non-regulated material management and disposal, and training. They also serve as dedicated liaisons to the NCNG Environmental Office and command staff.

"FMS #1 remains an environmental leader based on its dedication to sustainability and pollution prevention and environmental training," said 1st Sgt. Todd Lingerfelt, the FMS #1 Supervisor. “we are pleased that our efforts can be recognized and hope to share our management philosophies to enhance the organization as a whole.”
