ABF3 Czarny is the first member of his family to join any branch of the military. Some service members serve to carry on a family tradition, however, Czarny was searching for a way to carve a path that was uniquely his own.
Currently stationed aboard USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78), the Navy’s newest and first-in-class aircraft carrier, Czarny is assigned to the ship’s V-4 division of air department. The 82 Sailors of V-4 division operate CVN 78’s first-in-class aircraft fueling system in order to provide clean, clear, and bright fuel to air-wing aircraft and the ship’s emergency diesel generators. Additionally, V-4 is responsible for fuel storage, the upkeep of fuel transfer equipment, and the operations of the Fuels quality assurance laboratory.
“It’s a whole other world on the flight deck, it really makes you feel alive,” said Czarny. “The best part is right after the jets leave or when all of the engines shut down. In just a few moments, the flight deck can go from organized chaos to complete serenity.”
Czarny said that he is proud to have a hands-on role in the team responsible for fueling the aircraft that carry out Ford’s mission. While that mission is an all-hands effort, he said he enjoys seeing the direct result of his work as jets and helicopters leave the flight deck. That pride and ownership of his work is highly visible to his Shipmates.
“He’s an all-round, can-do Sailor with a positive attitude,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) 1st Class Nathan Rhodes, from Mt. Victory, Ohio, V-4 division’s flight deck leading petty officer. “It’s reflected in his personality so his junior Sailors, or anyone that works with him, strive to be better as a result.”
Czarny’s work ethic, motivation, and attention to detail were just a few reasons why he was recently recognized as the ship’s “Wolverine of the Week,” a weekly ship-wide award highlighting standout Sailors.
“If he does anything, he’s going to do it 100 percent,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st Class Daniel Balajadia, from Long Beach, California, V-4’s divisional leading petty officer. “If he’s sweeping the deck, then he’s running to get the broom.”
Czarny attributes much of his success and motivation to his mentor, Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Fuels) 2nd Class Steven Morris, from Allentown, Pennsylvania, assigned to V-4 division. When Morris checked onboard, Czarny quickly identified his deck plate leadership style and devotion to junior Sailors as something he respected and wanted to emulate in his life and career.
“I tell my guys all the time; it’s important that your name means something,” said Morris. “When someone hears your name, there should be no doubt that whatever it’s tied to is quality. Czarny took that and ran with it; he’s motivated day in and day out.”
USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is currently undergoing a 12-month post-shakedown availability at and maintenance period at Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding, Newport News, Virginia, following a testing and evaluation period.
