Lt. Col. Lynn Pate, first took command in 2015, leading Soldiers of the 2-111th through many missions during his time with them.
During the ceremony, Pate recognized the unit’s accomplishments during his command, noting how the 2-111th was the only unit mentioned favorably four times in the after action review by the Operation Northern Strike commanding general. Along with participation in the Operation Northern Strike exercise, the unit ran airfield operations for the annual Concours de Elegance car show annually, and supported Hurricane Irma.
Incoming commander, Lt. Col. Michael Adler has been a friend and co-worker to Pate on the full-time side of the house.
“Not only is he extremely talented, he’s an outstanding friend and officer,” said Pate, who left the Unit with these words, “Serve him as well as you served me and this unit will go to heights as not ever reached.”
Lt. Col. Michael Adler, credited his new unit first at the ceremony, by directing the audience to look at the soldiers that were standing before him.
“These represent some of the finest soldiers in the Florida Army National Guard. Florida Guard Aviation in general is reputed as top tiered in any category,” said Adler. “From its early days to now, the 2-111th is regarded as the best and most relevant air traffic unit in the Florida Army National Guard and the United States Army. It didn’t just happen. It is the direct result of engaged compassionate soldiers, all of us committed to excellence.”
“Together we will build on the success of the past and we will continue to exceed expectations going forward,” said Adler.
Adler is not new to leadership. He began his commission as a 2LT in the FLARNG, being awarded the George C. Marshall Award for leadership. Adler believes in leadership through empowerment.
“You can’t empower anyone. Leaders can only provide the environment and encouragement for empowerment to occur, but the person being empowered has to have the drive and initiative to accept it to be able to work without direct guidance,” said Adler. “The 2-111th has a long history of people who are very specialized in their jobs, and as such, it would not function if empowerment was not occurring. I plan on maintaining that pre-existing culture of empowerment and growing it.”
Command Sgt. Maj, Operations Sgt. Maj. and senior enlisted advisor to the commander for the 2-111th Aviation Regiment, has known Adler from his first entry into the guard spanning over 20 years. Most of their history together was in the 1-111th Aviation Battalion out of Jacksonville.
Lacy said, “He’s a great leader, and I’ve known that, and when I heard he was coming, I was glad to hear it. This unit has nothing to look to but great things out of him.”
