FORT IRWIN, Calif. – Approximately two-dozen Soldiers with the 213th Regional Support Group are providing breakfast and dinner chow to more than 200 support Soldiers in the Rotational Unit Bivouac Area of National Training Center here during rotation 18-09.

Napoleon is supposed to have said that an army marches on its stomach. If that is the case, the Pennsylvania National Guard Soldiers at this NTC rotation will be marching far.

“We’re doing our best to give the best quality food to all our Soldiers,” Sgt. Angel Centeno Ortiz, first cook with the 252nd Quartermaster Company, 728th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, 213th Regional Support Group, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, and an Allentown, Pa. resident.

The team of cooks wakes up as early as 2 a.m. to have breakfast ready by 6 a.m. in addition to preparing and serving dinner chow in the heat of the afternoon. Lunch consists of a Meal Ready-to-Eat (MRE).

“I love my job, I love to take care of my Soldiers and it makes me feel good knowing I’m doing something that everybody likes, which is to eat,” said Centeno Ortiz. “We try to keep it the best quality because it’s hard to be out there training when you’re hungry.”

Centeno Ortiz and his crew agree their mission is challenging, but they always get the job done.

“Considering our limited resources and the isolation here, this is the best chow I’ve ever had in a field environment,” said Maj. David Krzak, personnel officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 213th RSG, Pennsylvania Army National Guard and a Duncannon, Pa. resident.

A good hot meal for Soldiers in an otherwise austere environment is a force multiplier and has a huge impact on the morale and welfare of everyone in the unit.
